Lampeter 32 - Nantgaredig 24

This was a second journey in a week for Nantgaredig over the river Teifi into Ceredigion having the previous Saturday gained a victory over Tregaron in the Bowl. The Lampeter side are one of the early front runners in the league and aware that Nantgaredig are worthy opponents as a measure of their progress from last year under a pair of new coaches.

Lampeter set out their game plan from the start with ball carriers working close to the rucks and mauls providing enough supporting players to ensure continued possession. Carwyn Lewis at scrum half marshalled his forwards and Dion Hughes at outside half and Rhys Douglas at full back kicked to gain field position inside Nantgaredig territory.

Nantgaredig had a solid scrum but were second best in the lineout and struggled to gain parity in the contact area. They also lacked sufficient ball carriers on the day and when opportunities did arise their possession was slow and laboured. It was therefore against the run of play that Nantgaredig scored the first try. Bleddyn Lewis at full back halted a Lampeter attack and kicked the ball downfield for Rhys Schiavone to follow up and score beneath the post.

Lampeter came back with a try by Carwyn Lewis who took advantage of a quick scrum ball and slow reactions of the Nantgaredig back row to give the half time score of 7-10. The second half continued with Nantgaredig forced to attack from their own half and following a turnover Lampeter took advantage of having numbers on the narrow side to allow man of the match Rhys Douglas to score in the corner. It was to the credit of the Nantgaredig backs that they defended everything that the Lampeter threequarters attempted and were able to take advantage of any broken play. First was a well finished try by Rhydian Evans which was a result of inter passing from deep within their own half. Then Dafydd Lewis started a counter attack in his own 22 and the ball was fed to centre Rhys Schiavone who beat a number of defenders and scored his second try of the afternoon.

Lampeter responded by increasing their forward dominance in the tight play resulting in 5 penalties awarded in their favour and each one converted by Douglas. It was a matter of time before a Nantgaredig player was yellow carded by the referee for these infringements and the result was sealed by a late try from Lampeter wing Gethin Hunter. Lampeter were full value for their win bearing in mind the amount of possession and field position enjoyed during the game. Nantgaredig will need to regroup and review their game plan before the teams meet again later in the season.
