Llandeilo 16 : Nantgaredig 22

Nant cemented their 3rd place in the league with a hard fought win against much improved Llandeilo. The home full back Owen Roberts excelled with 3 well taken penalties and the conversion of a first half try.

Nant had stormed into an early lead with two well worked team tries from way out by wingers Rhydian Evans and Gethin Davies. Outside half Meirion Davies converted Davies's try but Nant failed to pull away by failing to convert two subsequent penalties.

Llandeilo despite being 12 points down in the first quarter showed great character to fight back with a penalty from Owen Roberts and a try from a well organised driving maul by the front five from close to the Nant line which was again converted by Roberts.

It was clear that both sides wanted to play open expansive rugby but the heavy conditions made handling difficult With both defences  on top for long periods handling errors crept into the game and with the score at 12 10 to Nant at half time it was always going to be a close game.

Nant continued to attack at every opportunity in the second half and it was the impressive Rhidian Evans who engineered the next score. Fielding a clearing Llandeilo kick 22 meters out he outflanked his opposite number only to be tackled high as he dived for the corner.  Meirion Davies converted the resulting penalty try.

To their credit Llandeilo did not capitulate and Roberts kicked two more well struck penalties each side of a Davies penalty for Nant.  It was tense final 10 minutes but it was Nant who finished the stronger to hold out and complete the double against their near neighbours.  Roberts was the stand out performer for Llandeilo while both the Nant wingers had very good games.  Man of the match was Nant's George Gleeson at scrum half who was involved in everything and hardly put a foot wrong.  As in every game this season his defensive work was outstanding.

Nantgaredig are celebrating 50 years of rugby and welcome the Swedish National team to Ystrad Fields on Saturday kick off 12.30pm   It is sure to be a great occasion for the Towy Valley Club having its best season ever under captain Bleddyn Lewis and their experienced coaches Derek Thomas and Mike King.
