WWRU Plate Final - 23/05/18

Nantgaredig 59 : Bynea 5

Captain Bleddyn Lewis lifted the first piece of silverware for Nantgaredig since the Club became full members of the Welsh Rugby Union when they defeated Bynea in the WWRU Plate final held at Tycroes RFC on Wednesday evening.

With a good number of Nant supporters there to cheer the team on, they were treated to some fantastic rugby with players showing pace and vision in order to overwhelm the opposition. It is fair to say that Nantgaredig had more pace out wide with wing Rhydian Evans scoring two tries and was awarded the Man of the Match cup. No doubt there will be a special place for his photograph with the cup at Ysgol Nantgaredig where Rhydian teaches.

The backs of course, would not be scoring tries were it not for the tremendous effort made by the forwards in matching an experienced Bynea eight. Back row trio of Gavin Orson, Rhydian Davies and Gareth Lloyd were exceptional as was second row Carwyn Davies who secured quality lineout ball.

Nantgaredig led at half time 29-0 through tries by Gareth Lloyd, Rhys Schiavone, Rhydian Evans, Rhys Edwards and Rhydian Davies. The second half had less than 5 minutes played when Bleddyn Lewis crossed for the first try and the scoreboard continued to move with the names of Rhydian Evans, Lee Williams, Lloyd Williams and Dafydd Lewis all scoring. Bynea had a consolation try with the last move of the match.

The Club recognises the special effort made by all players during this long season and especially those players who have contributed but were unable to make it onto the field in the final.

Nantgaredig's Season came to a conclusion with a near perfect performance in the Final of the West Wales Plate Competition.
