Nantgaredig 50 : Llangadog 3

Nantgaredig opened the new rugby season with a bonus point win against visiting Llangadog. The home team were quickly out of the blocks scoring 10 unanswered points in under 6 minutes when first they pushed Llangadog off their own defensive scrum. From beneath a mass of bodies on the ground second row Gwyn Pierce appeared to claim the try.Minutes later the three quarters moved the ball wide for wing Rhys Schiavone to score his first league try for Nantgaredig.

The two pre-season games clearly benefited the home side although it didn't take long for Llangadog to gain their own momentum and their concerted pressure resulted in a penalty converted by Dafydd Jenkins. The away forwards continued to place more pressure on Nant and managed to cross the line only for referee Adrian Lewis to disallow the try for an infringement. This was as close that Llangadog came to scoring in the first half as the Nantgaredig backs moved the ball across the line to score 4 further tries before half time.

With a healthy lead moving into the second half it allowed Nantgaredig to make a number of substitutions to give other squad members game time. Llangadog in turn raised their game and had lengthy periods of possession but were unable to convert this into points.

For Nantgaredig, the Lewis brothers of Bleddyn and Dafydd kept running at pace and differing angles to keep the score board moving.  As the game progressed more and more gaps appeared for half backs George Gleeson and Meirion Davies to score. Wing forward Simon McCall made his debut and shows a lot of promise in the forwards whilst it was good to see hooker Mark Davies back after his injury following an accident.

Coach Derek Thomas was pleased with the home team performance although he commented that he will expect an entirely different game when we next meet Llangadog on their own ground later in the season.

Nantgaredig tries: Gwyn Pierce, Rhys Schiavone, Rhydian Davies, Bleddyn Lewis 2, Rhys Edwards, George Gleeson, Meirion Davies. Cons Meirion Davies 5

Llangadog: Pen. Dafydd Jenkins
