Bereavement - Mr Alun West (1935-2021)

It is with profound sadness that Nantgaredig RFC confirm the loss of our friend and colleague, Alun West. He will be greatly missed.

Alun made a huge contribution to Welsh Rugby, not only was he a  life member of Nantgaredig RFC but also of the Llanelli District Rugby Union and  the Llanelli District Referees Society.

Alun was without doubt one of the most respected and longest, if not the longest servant of local rugby having been the Club Secretary of Burry Port RFC, as well as being a former Fixture Secretary, Secretary, Chairman and President of the Llanelli District Rugby Union. His contribution to local rugby has been immense.

A respected former WRU referee, Alun later became the Llanelli District referees appointment secretary and more recently a Scarlets Region referee's advisor having along the way significantly helped the careers of a number of first class referees including Nigel Owens.

Nigel on hearing the news simply said ' one of the best'.

The highlight of Alun's refereeing career occurred in 1978 when he was the appointed a touch judge for the Grand Slam decider between Wales and France at the Arms Park.

A native of Burry Port but with family connections with Nantgaredig, Alun grew up spending many a school holiday at Ystrad Farm with his cousin Arwyn Allen.

Alun worked for many years in the Llanelli Steel Works, alongside Gareth Jenkins the former Wales and Scarlets Coach. He and Gareth have remained very close friends to this day.

Alun is survived by his wife Ann to whom we extend our sincerest condolences.
