Nantgaredig 68 : New Dock Stars 13

Nantgaredig played their final home game of the season against New Dock Stars of Llanelli whilst Nantgaredig Seconds played their match on the adjoining pitch against their counterparts from Llandovery RFC.

The first team remain unbeaten in the league this season and had already secured the championship prior to this match with a target of 100 points within reach. Perhaps there was too much eagerness from the home side to move the ball early in the game that led to a number of errors and allowed New Dock to take a lead of 6 points from two penalties. The game was in its 30th minute before Nant opened their account when full back Dafydd Lewis broke through the New Dock line to score his first try.  Minutes later scrum half George Gleeson fielded the ball inside his own half and used his pace and strength to beat a number of defenders to score beneath the posts. Just before half time a third try was scored by winger Rhys Schiavone to give Nant a half time lead of 21-6.

The Nantgaredig coaches were clearly unimpressed with their team's performance even though they had a winning lead in the match. The second half produced a further 6 tries with Man of the Match award given to Dafydd Lewis at full back who added a further two for his hat trick. New Dock players entered the spirit of the game by moving the ball wide at every opportunity and were unlucky not to add to their points total but failed to get that final pass to hand.   Nantgaredig however were the opposite where there was support for every ball carrier and every pass good or bad seemed to be magically under someone's control.

The final try of the afternoon was scored by one of the team's most popular and loyal players in second row Carwyn Davies who carried the ball and two defenders the last 5 metres over the line.

Following the match, Mr Chris Jones our District Representative on the WRU and Nantgaredig's own former Welsh International Mefin Davies presented the Club with the Division 3B West trophy.

The final league game away at Betws will be difficult as any team will be motivated to take down the colours of the Champions and especially as Nantgaredig are unbeaten in the league this season. There is also the small matter of defending the West Wales Plate trophy against Trimsaran at the end of the month.

Tries:

Dafydd Lewis(3), George Gleeson(2), Rhys Schiavone, Rhys Thomas, Bleddyn Lewis, Tom Smythe, Carwyn Davies.

Conversions

Meirion Davies(9)
