Nantgaredig 20 - Tenby United 10

Nantgaredig made a solid start to their fixtures in the Division 2 West by scoring 3 tries to 1 against visiting Tenby United. Tenby have played at this level and at higher divisions on a consistent basis over the years and proved to be a stern challenge for Nant in their first home match of the season.

A strong breeze gusting from the direction of the Old Railway Yard end made difficult conditions for goal kicking and it was in the 25th minute when the deadlock was broken with a well worked try for full back Dafydd Lewis. A number of penalties were awarded during the game mainly for infringements in the tackle area and the referee soon reached for the first of 6 yellow cards issued during the game. Meirion Davies kicked the penalty and even though Tenby exerted pressure towards the end of the half the score remained 8 - 0 to Nant at the break.

The second half saw Tenby opening their account with a penalty kicked by outside half Harry Rossiter. The visitors started to exert more pressure on Nant by driving their front eight and gaining ground metre by metre. The home team did well to defend against this aspect of the game although the penalty count will be of concern to the respective coaches. A period of play from Nant saw Tenby having to clear their lines only for full back Dafydd Lewis to field the ball and counter attack. Flanker Tom Smythe was at hand in support who in turn fed outside half Meirion Davies to cross for a try in the corner. Nant had their tails up at this stage and it was another counter attack this time by George Gleeson who had moved to scrum half from his starting position on the wing. His grubber kick behind the Tenby defence allowed opposite wing Rhydian Evans to gather and cross unopposed for Nant's third try.

In the closing minutes of the match, Tenby finally managed to work an overlap to allow Ben Pugh to score their only try which was then converted by Lloyd Thomas for the extra two points.

Next week Nantgaredig make the short trip to Carmarthen Athletic which promises to draw a large amount of local support for both sides in this the nearest of derby games.

Congratulations to Nantgaredig Seconds who won their match away against Llandovery Seconds 21-0
